iPhone 3GS Encryption Is ‘Useless’

iPhone 3GS Encryption is ‘Useless’ for businesses according to Jonathan Zdziarski, a well known iPhone developer and hacker.

In an article by Wired.com, Zdziarski reveals that the iPhone encryption is so weak that it can be cracked in under 2 minutes with a freeware application.

“It is kind of like storing all your secret messages right next to the secret decoder ring,” said Zdziarski. “I don’t think any of us [developers] have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it’s hard to describe why it’s such a big threat to security.” An entire raw disk image of the phone can be made in about 45 minutes.

To demonstrate the phone’s weakness. Zdziarski established a screenshare with Wired.com and was easily able to bypass any encryption to access their data.

Since Apple’s encryption is so poor Zdziarski says its up to developers to add an extra level of security to their application.

“If they’re relying on Apple’s security, then their application is going to be terribly insecure,” he said. “Apple may be technically correct that [the iPhone 3GS] has an encryption piece in it, but it’s entirely useless toward security.”

BigBoss Releases SBSettings 3.0.2 for iPhone

BigBoss has released an update to his SBSettings application which lets you toggle preferences directly from the Springboard.

—–
The processes button “Free Memory” apparently has never done anything for anyone at all! I had one user report this and no one else. I found this today while installing SBSettings on a friend’s iPhone and noticing that there was no free memory after hitting the button. So none of you have ever seen how awesome this is! It is fixed now. Turns out I packaged the 3.0.1 toggle pack up poorly and the file was copied to the wrong folder.

v3.0.2 of the app changes the way the window opens slightly. It now requires at least 50 pixels of swiping before the window opens. This is to help prevent accidental opens. You can swipe left to right or right to left, it doesn’t matter. You cannot swipe down. (Let’s see if this one generates me any mail).

SBSettings can be downloaded from the BigBoss Cydia repository.

3G Unrestrictor Bypasses Wi-Fi Only Restrictions for iPhone 3GS

3G Unrestrictor allows you to use applications over 3G even if they are restricted to Wi-Fi only. You can also use 3G Unrestrictor to enable application/podcast downloads over 10MB and watch high quality YouTube videos over 3G.

Features:
You can for example while on 3G/EDGE/GRPS:
o Make free calls using VoIP software like Skype, Fring, Truphone and others
o Watch TV with SlingPlayer
o Watch high quality YouTube Videos, just like on WiFi
o Download apps bigger than 10MB
o Download podcasts bigger than 10MB

Developers were forced to put those restrictions in by Apple, but since with the help of 3G Unrestrictor, the apps actually “think” they are on WiFi, you can do all that.

Verified applications include: Skype, Slingplayer, YouTube, AppStore, iTunes Store, Nimbuzz, Fring, Truphone, FriendCaller, SipPhone

3G Unrestrictor supports the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS. It is now available from the Cydia Store for a cost of $2.

New Version of Fring With iPhone Push Notification

Fring has announced a new version of their iPhone application which supports push notification. Fring lets you communicate on all your favourite social networks including Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, SIP, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM.

What does it do? When you log out of fring, it keeps you in “online” status so your buddies can contact you, and you can choose whether to respond to an alert notifying you that someone is trying to chat, call, send you files, etc.

How does it work? Whenever someone calls/chats you, you’ll receive a beep sound, as well as a pop-up window, telling you that your friend is trying to contact you. Once you click on that pop-up window, it’ll log you back into fring and take you straight to the relevant window.

How do you register? Push Notification is enabled by Apple itself; once you download the new version, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to enable this option for fring, click ‘enable‘ and you’re ready to go.

If you choose to temporarily disable this option you can simply click on ‘more‘ and then on ‘go offline‘; so once you log out of fring, Push Notification will be disabled, until next time you log in.

You can download fring from the App Store at no cost.

‘Resident Evil 4′ Mobile Edition Video, Accidental Early Release?

img_2013

Japanese iPhone site AppBank managed to snag a copy and video of Resident Evil 4 mobile edition which was released into the Japanese iTunes Store briefly. The app has since been pulled for unclear reasons, but not before they managed to get some screenshots and the embedded video below.

The game appears to use a version of Capcom’s 3rd person 3D that was also used in Resident Evil: Degeneration.

So, no idea when the game will return to the Japanese store and if/when it will arrive in the U.S. and other international stores, but something to look forward to.

This is an extension of Springboard can support as many applications as SBSettings, etc Winterboard. The update is primarily targeted to security and look at the details below:

It was not issued any changelog so I addressed directly to Saurik, who explained to me that this new version allows you to select various daemons to the firmware version required, and consequently, once all the developers use this feature, not you run the most dangerous to install applications not compatible with your device.

Does not end here. Arrive in a few days a new update that will increase the capacity of mobilesubstrate and allow the installation of new extensions that come in Cydia on the same day. In particular, it refers to a recognition of the hardware device, which will install the new daemons or at least to run applications in a totally different sull’iPhone 3GS.
