Geohot’s Next Jailbreak for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad To Be Called Rubyra1n? – Rumor

We have just been tipped off about the possible name for the next jailbreak by Geohot, called Rubyra1n. The domain Rubyra1n.com was registered by the iPhone hacker named George Hotz (aka geohot) on 27th March 2010.
Posted Image
Interestingly, whois records for both blackra1n and rubyra1n shares same record while whois record for limera1n is different. Geohot might have changed it after the discovery of limera1n.com domain (before its release) back in April 2010. Whois records also reveals that both limera1n.com and rubyra1n.com were registered on the same day, that is March 27th 2010 which makes it even more authentic. Though there is no confirmation about this by Geohot himself. Oh and yes, Geohot is not on Twitter. If you have been following someone on Twitter with word “geohot” in its alias, than it is most likely a fake profile and I suggest you un-follow all such profiles now

How to Untether Your iOS Jailbreak (Mac) [4.2.1]

These are instructions on how to untether your jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 using the iPhone Dev-Team’s ‘backup plan’ method on Mac OS X.

Currently this very first beta1 is limited to iPhone4, iPad, and iPod touch 4G. Bluetooth functionality is disabled for the time being until some issues are resolved.

Requirements:
You will need to have access to the iOS 4.2b3 ipsw and your iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved. You also already need to be jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1. MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS AS IT IS A BETA!

Step One
Create a folder called Pwnage on your desktop and in it place:
- Xcode (also found on your Mac OS X Install DVD)
- MacPorts
- Usbmuxd
- RedSn0w 0.9.7b1
- iOS 4.2.1 (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch)
- iOS 4.2b3 *Only iPhone developers have legit access to this firmware

Step Two
Double click the Xcode dmg to mount it then double click the pkg to install the application.

Step Three
Double click the MacPorts dmg to mount it then double click the pkg to install the application.

Step Four
Open Terminal from Applications:Utilities then input the following. If asked for a password then enter your administrator password.

sudo port install libusb

Once libusb has installed then input the following command: sudo port install cmake

Once cmake has finished installing input the following command: sudo port install pkgconfig

Step Five
Double click the downloaded usbmuxd archive to extract it.

Return to the Terminal window and input the following commands to install usbmuxd: cd ~/Desktop/Pwnage/usbmuxd-1.0.6

mkdir build

cd build

cmake ..

make

sudo make install

Step Six
Disconnect and then reconnect your jailbroken iPhone to the computer via USB. Make sure OpenSSH is installed through Cydia then input the following into the Terminal window:

cd ~/Desktop/Pwnage/usbmuxd-1.0.6/python-client/

chmod +x tcprelay.py

./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222

*Make sure to leave this running as you continue the tutorial…

Step Seven
Double click the RedSn0w archive to extract it. Then launch RedSn0w from the extracted folder.

Click the Browse button

Select the iOS 4.2.1 ipsw from the Pwnage folder on your Desktop and click Open.

Click the Next button to continue.

RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.

You will now be presented with a list of checkboxes.

Select Jailbreak Monte (untether) from the list of checkboxes. You will be asked to select the iOS 4.2b3 ipsw from the Pwnage folder on your desktop then click Open. Click Next to continue.

Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode.

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

RedSn0w will prepare Jailbreak Monte files, exploit with Limera1n, Upload RAM Disk and Kernel, and Send Jailbreak Monte files.

Notice that during this time usbmuxd will facilitate the connection to your device.

RedSn0w will inform you when it has completed successfully.

Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Is “Probably Going To Be a Cydia Package”

It looks like everyone seems to have missed this! But if this statement from Comex is anything to go by, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 might be as simple as installing a package from Cydia over your existing Redsn0w tethered jailbreak – Yes, you don’t need to restore or re-jailbreak your device.

Comex: it’s probably going to be a Cydia package. if I can get it to work.

When someone asked Comex “what do you mean by that”, Comex replied:

Comex: @GP34MVP that everyone’s wrong including @MuscleNerd :p

Probably referring to this statement from MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev-Team.

It is important to note that the iPhone Dev-Team already has a backup plan ready, but that will require iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blobs for untethered jailbreak. Comex is said to have a more efficient untethered jailbreak method for iOS 4.2.1. This untethered solution will almost certainly be applicable to all current iOS 4.2.1 devices, including the new A4-based ones which includes iPhone 4, iPad, Apple TV 2G and iPod touch 4G.

While the actual details about the state of the jailbreak are still unknown, but what we do know is that it is probably not coming by Christmas, as been confirmed yesterday by Comex himself.

More info as it comes, stay tuned !

The SHAtter Jailbreak Has Been Leaked

The SHAtter jailbreak which was being saved for the next iPhone update has been leaked, according to tweets by MuscleNerd and p0sixninja.

P0sixninja is publicly accusing MuscleNerd of leaking the exploit; however, MuscleNerd states this is not the case and would be illogical for him to leak the exploit since he needs the jailbreak to perform an unlock for the next device. He also notes that there were 15 others in the room when the code was posted by pod2g.

Unfortunately, this likely means Apple will block the exploit by the time any new iDevices are released.

The exploit (and payload) was developed by @pod2g a few months after @p0sixninja discovered the crash. You can watch the jailbreak demonstrated below.

Also of interest, p0sixninja says that an untethered bootrom exploit is still on the way. You can read more of the discussion from both sides via the link to their twitter accounts below…

Looks Like We’re Not Getting an Untethered Jailbreak for Christmas After All

Posted Image

Did MuscleNerd spoke too fast when he said last week that we’d get an untethered jailbreak for Christmas? It sure looks like it when reading this tweetComex sent out a few minutes ago saying that he was going to miss his Christmas deadline..

At this point, I’m not sure whether Comex is working on an untethered solution or a full new jailbreak tool (jailbreakme?) One thing is sure though, we might not get anything from him this Christmas…

This hasn’t been confirmed yet so there is no reason to freak out about it. I know I’d rather wait a few more days and have a fully functional and stable jailbreak rather than having a half-baked tool that ends up screwing things up

CopyTrans offers easier way to transfer iTunes libraries

CopyTrans, a PC software company from Switzerland, has unveiled a cross-platform solution to help one of the most common problems facing “switchers” and others who want to move their entire iTunes libraries from a Windows PC to a Mac: how can I do this while preserving aspects like play counts, album artwork, rankings and more? While it can be done manually, CopyTrans TuneSwift can ease the transfer process, as well as restore iTunes libraries.

The program preserves music, video, app purchases, audiobooks, iOS device backups and podcasts — as well as the “extra” information people who have invested time in creating their library prize, like artwork, playlists and ratings. This also allows iOS device owners to keep their device linked to the original library, even as it has been moved to a new machine.

A user will download the Windows version of the program and transfer their iTunes library to an external drive, then connect that drive to the Mac and use the Mac version, presently in beta, to “restore” it to iTunes on the Mac.

CopyTrans Tuneswift is being made available free until March 15th. The Mac version can be downloaded here and registered free for MacNN readers using the code TUNESWIFT-MACNN. The Windows version is available here and can also be registered free using the same code.

Next Version of Redsn0w Will Allow You To Untether iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak With One-Click

MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team has confirmed today that the next version of Redsn0w will include an option which will allow you to untether your iPhone jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1 without having to restore your device.

MuscleNerd: Thanks to comex, redsn0w can now handle much bigger files than ramdisk 25MB limit. Useful for “backup plan” 4.2 untether

MuscleNerd: @jkurtz87 it shouldn’t require a restore…just another redsn0w run. (That’s the goal!)

The advantage of this will be that you wont have to reinstall any of your iTunes’ or Cydia apps. All you ever have to do will be rerun Redsn0w jailbreak and it will be done!

Expect this new version of Redsn0w for all iOS devices to be available somewhere around the Christmas eve, followed by iPhone 4 unlock on newer basebands in January. We will of course let you know as soon as it is available for download
