Halal Scanner 1.0 Released

Halal Scanner takes a photo of the ingredients label of a food product and determines the halal status of any food additives contained in the product. Users also have the option of searching through a datclothse of food additives on the iPhone instead of using the iPhone camera. This is done entirely on the iPhone and no network connection is required for any of the features in Halal Scanner.

Muslims all around the world find it difficult shopping for food products with such a large variety of additives in food products these days. Halal Scanner is an innovative one of a kind app that aims to solve this problem by providing a datclothse of food additives that users can search or scan.

“I remember how frustrating it was going to the supermarket and trying to figure out if the numbers on the ingredients were halal. It was out of this frustration that Halal Scanner was born.” said Faizal Mohammed, creator of Halal Scanner.

The core features of Halal Scanner are Scan, Search, and Browse. With our Scan features, users can take a photo of the ingredients label using the iPhone camera. The user will be prompted to crop the photo to select the area containing the ingredients. Upon cropping, Halal Scanner will start processing for a while and come back with results of food additives found in the product. Users are prompted to check all other ingredients not found in the scan manually.

The Search and Browse features allow the user to search through our datclothse of food additives. This is done entirely on the iPhone and no network connection is required for any of the features in Halal Scanner.

Pricing and Availability:
Halal Scanner 1.0 is $1.99 (USD) and available exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category. Review copies are available upon request.

iTunes 9.1 Breaks BlackRa1n Tethered Jailbreak?

The iTunes 9.1 update reportedly stops iPhones and iPod touches that are tethered jailbroken with BlackRa1n from being able to reboot.

This issues are only being experienced by Windows users because according to iH8Sn0w “blackra1n hooks to the dll that has different offsets of what it is actually looking for”

iH8Sn0w has since released a blackra1n fix for iTunes 9.1 which can be downloaded from here. Both 32Bit + 64Bit are supported.

Please note this is not an official update from Geohot. Its unclear if he plans to release one.

SBSettings Gets Updated With Activator Support SBSettings Gets Updated With Activator Support

BigBoss has released an update to SBSettings, a utility that move your important toggles directly into Springboard where they are always available even while other apps are running.

What’s New In v3.0.6b4
- Added app sorting in hidden icons and dock applications section of more app.

- Added ability to switch to max 2 rows. This keeps smaller window for those that want it. Find the option in extras in more app. On firmwares 2.x max of 8 toggles would be the limit. On 3.x you would be able to scroll pages.

- Added “App Folders” section to the more app to get the path to a specific app folder. Useful for trying to fiddle with appstore apps that have cryptic locations.

- Added Activator support. Activator v1.3 or newer. Also beta. We are waiting on the thumbs up from the sbsettings beta test and then this all goes live.

- Removed EDGE toggle which only worked on 2.x devices and replaced it with DATA toggle that should work on all devices.

You can download SBSettings from the BigBoss Cydia Repository.

SBSettings Beta Repo

“>

I have added a special repo for beta testing SBSettings. In it, I have put an update to SBSettings and SBSettings toggles. I am looking for testers that are interested in testing things out. However, there are some rules you must agree to before doing this:

1) This is a beta repo. It should never be given out. It must never appear in any “all sources” packages. As soon as that happens, the repo will be removed. Steffwiz / pwncenter already *ruined* my last beta repo.

2) If you install anything from this repo, you are not going to look for tech support. You will need to be able to send syslogs if there are any springboard crashes or major problems. You can do so with logmailer. If you do not know how to do these things, please do not install the beta repo.

3) If there are issues, you must be capable of describing them well with details and willing to work through them to solve the problems rather than just reverting to an old version with “it didnt work”.

4) As this is beta software, I cannot guarantee its stable (although its working well for me and initial testers). Therefore, if you have a 3gs with no 3.1.2 SHSH stored in Cydia, I suggest you do not bother with the beta tests as long as there is no 3.1.3 jailbreak out.

Ok now that has been said, if you are interested in testing and helping out, please add the repo at this address: http://thebigboss.org/betarepo

Geohot Announces an Untethered Jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS, iPod touch, iPad

Geohot has announced an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 2G, 3G, and possibly the iPad!

The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models(ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too.

Don’t ask about a release date. You won’t make it happen any sooner.

We will post more information as it becomes available.

Easy Browser Based iPhone Jailbreak Could Be Possible Again!

An iPhone exploit demonstrated at the CanSecWest conference today could bring back easy jailbreaks from the 1.x iPhone days.

Wednesday, researchers hacked a non-jailbroken iPhone, Safari on Snow Leopard, and both IE 8 and Firefox on Windows 7.

Charlie Miller won $10,000 after hacking Safari on a MacBook Pro without having physical access to the computer.

Ralf Philipp Weinmann of the University of Luxembourg, and Vincenzo Iozzo of German company Zynamics, hacked the iPhone and will receive a $15,000 prize.

Interestingly, their hack could mean good news for those looking to jailbreak. lozzo and Weinmann spent two weeks designing a way to steal the contents of the iPhone SMS datclothse.

To accomplish the attack the iPhone needs to visit a Web site which hosts the exploit code. “The payload executes and uploads the local SMS datclothse of the phone to the server we control,” said Weinmann.

They bypassed digital code signatures using a technique known since 1997 but never used on an ARM processor. The exploit then looked for chucks in Apple’s code that could be pieced together to accomplish the attack.

While the attack was used to grab just the SMS data, it could also be used to perform a jailbreak on the device, according to MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev-Team.

“Congrats to @_snagg and @esizkur. This potentially re-opens userland jailbreaks that haven’t been around since 1.x days (jailbreakme.com)”

“the bug they used should exist in 3.1.3 MobileSafari on all iphones/ipods though the actual payload bytes may differ”

MuscleNerd warns that Apple will likely close this bug as soon as possible…

“Userland exploits affect security for all iPhones so expect Apple to close these as soon as they can. JBers avoid updates!”

Circuitous App Switcher for iPhone Gets Important Update

Circuitous, a custom app switch for the iPhone by Dan Zimmerman, has been updated to v1.1 and adds numerous new features.

Circuitous is a custom app switcher. It shows your open applications in a nice dock on the right side of the screen where you can launch and exit apps from there. Also, you can cycle through your open apps. With this I mean the apps you have open, in the order you opened them, are cycled. They open the next app in line. There is forward and backward cycling in this version! All three of these features, the dock, cycling forward, and cycling backward are all managed by Activator methods within the settings app.

What’s New In This Version:
- Tap and hold icon to reorder, or slide out until the icon dims to quit that app
- Shows free memory on the bottom of the dock
- Double tap dock to free up more memory
- Options for badges
- Icon labels
- App animation
- Left and right handed
- Become homescreen
- The x on the icons
- Ability to launch from lockscreen
- Moved down the dock to more in the middle.

After installing, load the settings app and configure your preferred dock activation method.

The application can be installed free from the Tweaks section of Cydia.
