Apple to Refresh Mac Pro, MacBook Air and Debut Web-based iTunes?

Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu says Apple could use WWDC to refresh the Mac Pro and MacBook; as well as debut a web-based iTunes.com service.

Besides the iPhone, “other announcements we are picking up that could potentially be made are iTunes.com, a web-based version of its iTunes client, and new Mac refreshes with faster processors and graphics, namely the Mac Pro and MacBook Air, which were last refreshed in March and June 2009, respectively,” he wrote in a note to clients this morning.

Digital Daily believes the Mac Pro and MacBook Air updates are feasible but doubts that iTunes.com will be ready in time. John Paczkowski quotes his colleague Peter Kafta who noted in April that Apple’s conversations with labels were “preliminary at best. So if you’re expecting to hear about an ‘iTunes.com’ offering in the near future–like during Apple’s June 7 developer conference–you’re likely to be disappointed.”

AT&T Says 4 out of 10 iPhone Sales Are to Enterprise

AT&T says 4 out of 10 iPhone sales are made to enterprise customers, according to a ZDNet report.

The site relays comments made by AT&T Business Solutions Unit CEO, Ron Spears:

Four out of 10 sales of the iPhone are made to enterprise users. When the iPhone came out, what most people heard in the first year from ‘07 to ‘08 was oh my God, it’s not BlackBerry secure. This is not going to work on the enterprise space.

At the end of the day, it’s just software. That’s all it is. And by the time the 3G came out in ‘08 they had solved about 80% of the security issues. By the time the 3GS came out last summer, most CIOs will tell you today they have very few issues around the security that they need provided as they have come to know that RIM can do it because of the way RIM provides their solution.

So enterprises today view the iPhone as a mobile computer. It happens to have a voice application on it. But what’s important is what you can do with it, and the way you can mobilize workforces, and specific parts of your workforce, not the entire workforce.

When asked about Android in the enterprise, Spears said:

I haven’t seen the Android platform yet in the enterprise space. Not to say it won’t come, but pretty much that platform has been built with a very specific focus to consumers. Over time, my guess is there will be an evolution that’s kind of hard to ignore the enterprise space.

iPhone Vulnerability Makes It Easy to Access Your Pin Protected Data

A data protection vulnerability has been discovered with non-jailbroken pin protected 3GS iPhones that bypasses authentication and accesses data

The vulnerability was discovered by Bernd Marienfeldt and applies to various firmware versions.

This data protection flaw exposes music, photos, videos, podcasts, voice recordings, Google safe browsing datclothse, game contents… by in my opinion the quickest compromising read/write access discovered so far, without leaving any track record by the attacker. It’s about to imagine how many enterprises (e.g. Fortune 100) actually do rely on the expectation that their iPhone 3GS’s whole content is protected by encryption with an PIN code based authentication in place to unlock it.

The contents sample have been collected off a non jail broken iPhone 3GS (with latest iPhone OS installed, all apps fully up to date and immediately PIN lock enabled) by simply connecting it powered off via USB to a Linux Lucid Lynx PC (10.04) and then switched back on – being automatically mounted with given insecurity and never been attached to the PC before.

Merienfeldt believes the allowed write access could also lead into triggering a buffer overflow. Apple thinks they understand why this can happen but cannot provide timing or further details on the release of a fix.

iPhone Dev-Team Releases Developer Jailbreak for iPhone OS 4.0b4

The iPhone Dev-Team has released a jailbreak for developers using iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4.

The jailbreak is performed using a special .9.5 beta of RedSn0w.

This BETA release supports:
? iPhone 3G only (for now)
? Mac OSX only (for now)
? the 4.0beta1/beta4 FW only (for now)

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That’s because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta1/beta4 IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you’ve already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

AT&T Could Lose 6 Million Subscribers If Verizon Gets iPhone

Davenport & Company analyst Drake Johnstone believes AT&T could lose up to 6 million subscribers if Verizon gets the iPhone.

“Over the past several years, AT&T indicated that 40 percent of its new iPhone customers came from other carriers,” Johnstone theorized. “We estimate that AT&T has 15 million iPhone customers (as of Q-1 10) and believe that AT&T could lose as many as 6 million, or 40 percent, of its iPhone customers when Verizon begins selling the iPhone in 2011. We are reducing AT&T’s 2011 wireless subscriber additions from 6 million to 2 million (most of these new additions may be lower value connected devices such as eReaders instead of higher value long- term wireless customers), since we believe that Verizon could obtain Apple’s approval to sell and provide wireless service for the iPhone as early as mid-2011.”

Digital Daily notes that there are two things that could prevent this from happening.

1) Early Termination Fees – Its very interesting that AT&T nearly doubled their ETFs just days ago.
2) Family Talk/Business Plans – Digital Daily says 80% of AT&T’s customers are on these plans which would make it difficult to switch.

Apple Filming Video Chat Commercial for New iPhone?

American Beauty director Sam Mendes may be putting together a series of commercials for the new iPhone, according to Engadget.

The site has heard that the new device is being internally referred to as the Mammoth/N90.

A trusted source has confirmed to us that the ads will feature at least one spot where a mother and daughter are having a video chat conversation using the new front-facing camera that’s been spied on the face of that iPhone floating around Vietnam and Northern California.

A Twitter search has turned up evidence to support these claims with an actress and actor both heading to auditions for a new Apple commercial.
